From the Editors' Notes

Effective presidents are strong-willed, committed, charismatic individuals working in institutions where people understand the importance of good leadership. We need more of them. If we do not do something, the effective presidential species may become extinct. If we protect and assist these people, while encouraging others to follow in their footsteps, we may be able to increase their numbers. This volume of New Directions for Higher Education is one step in the right direction.
