Locke's political writings were an important influence on the constitutional development of Britain and, especially, the United States. His central theme, that government rests on the consent of the governed, finds expression in the opening words of the Declaration of Independence. His writings on the theory of knowledge base all knowledge on experience and in this contain an implicit challenge to established authority which serves complement his political writings.
