Book's Detail
Theology of the churches and the jewish people

Allan Brockway

What are the official theological positions of churches on Jews and Judaism? And what do these say about Christian faith itself-in light of what theologians, historians and biblical scholars are saying about the significance of the Jewish people for the faith of the church? The twenty statements by churches and church bodies-in particular the World Council of Churches-that comprise the first part of the book, and the commentary that follows, are designed to offer some answers to those questions.

This book is offered in the hope that the churches throughout the world will continue to reflect on the significance of the Jewish people for their own faith and life and will undertake with greater vigour the theological re-evaluation that forty years of intentional dialogue with Jews has made incumbent upon us all.

The Rev. Allan Brockway was programme secretary for Jewish-Christian relations in the Dialogue Sub-unit of the World Council of Churches from 1979 to 1988. Prof. Paul van Buren is professor for systematic theology at the University of Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany. Prof. Rolf Rendtorff is professor of Old Testament at the University of Heidelberg. The Rev. Dr Simon Schoon is chairman of the Council of Christians and Jews in the Netherlands.
