Cerillo, Augustus
Though evangelicals in America have emerged as a potent political force, they have not reached a consensus on political issues. In fact, their approaches to politics vary considerably.
In Salt and Light proponents of these per-spectives engage in lively and informed debate.
"Our text," write the authors, "is designed to fill a need for a short collection of essays that introduce readers to the mosaic of contemporary evangelical political thought." The authors identify four per spectives on the political spectrum: evangelical radical right, evangelical liberal, evangelical conserv ative, and fundamentalist new right. Essayists are Carl Henry, Lewis Smedes, Nicholas Wolterstorff, Isaac Rottenberg, George DeVries, Jr., Richard Quebedeaux, Jim Wallis, Jerry Falwell, and Ed Hindson
In Salt and Light the authors "thoughtfully mix documents and commentary to establish two things about the politics of evangelicals since World War II." writes Mark A. Noll, professor of history at Wheaton College "First, the period of fundamentalist with-drawal is definitely over. Second, the search for politi-cal positions in keeping with basic evangelical principles goes on. Read this fine book for a succinct account of evangelical political development as well as for a good introduction to the most important con-troversies in political issues.
