Modern governments are continuously expanding their functions while their competence at performing their primary political task is declining. There is much at stake here, notably maintaining the distinction between the private and public realms. A free society depends on the existence of a wide range of non-state structures, such as churches, schools, families, business enterprises, labour unions, and a host of other voluntary associations. One of the most difficult yet urgent challenges before us is to safeguard the freedom and integrity of such intermediate structures.

In Servant or Tyrant, the contributors explore the main trends of contemporary politics, subject them to a critical analysis, and discuss ways in which Christians can more actively preserve and enhance the precious fruits of freedom and justice in the political realm.
