IT WAS IN THE YEAR 1976 that America discovered the evangel-icals. After years of existing at the fringes of the national con-sciousness, evangelical Christianity found itself in the national spot-light upon the nomination and election to President of a small-town Southern Baptist, Jimmy Carter.

But evangelicalism as it was in 1976 and as it has developed since then can only be understood through an awareness of what brought it to that point.
