This book should take its place at the head of the list of special studies on chapters 12-14 of 1 Corinthians. As with other such studies, the concern is a contemporary one-the church, worship, and the charismatic phenomenon. Unlike previous studies, however, this one is deeply rooted in solid exegesis of the letter. The concern is first of all to hear this material on its own terms, as Paul's response to the situation in Corinth. Professor Martin sees the original problem as an expression of spiritual enthusiasm and elitism on the part of some of the believers, which is closely related to their view of the material world, including the body, as of lesser value. Hence he significantly includes chapter 15 in the study. Although not all will agree with Professor Martin's conclusions at every point, this closely argued study will be the one which all future studies of these chapters must take into account." |
