The book of Hebrews, particularly its authorship, has always been shrouded in mystery. “God only knows the truth," said Origen. But one thing is clear: The letter is intended to lead its readers from an elementary understanding to a mature knowledge of Christian truth. The pressure was on for the first-century Church. Since embracing Jesus as the Christ, the Jewish believers had been exposed to tyranny and persecution. But having started well, would they end well? Maybe a little pause along the way would be a good idea? Was it really worth it to press on? The insistent answer to their questions was a resounding “Yes! Jesus is the true Messiah, the Great High Priest, superior to angels, prophets, Moses, Aaron and all the rest. He is absolute and supreme." In an age of religious pluralism, we need to hear and heed the message, too—salvation, forgiveness, purpose for living and eternal life come through Christ alone.
