Christian Handbook to the Psalms

THE UTTER SINCERITY, THE WIDE RANGE, and the deep humanity of the psalms," writes R.E.O. White, "make them the voice of Every-man exploring the religious dimension of life." In this book White provides a careful investigation informed but not technical-of the meaning and value of each well-loved psalm for the Christian mind and heart.

In his introduction White discusses some of the basic features of the psalms: their recurrent themes (complaint, deliverance and vindication, worship, enthronement, God and nature, and wisdom), their prominent poetic features, and their sometimes puz-zling headings and closures.

He goes on to discuss the psalms individually, grouping them into five sections that correspond to the five books of the psalms. In his study of each psalm he gives a general explication of the poem's setting and message, glosses of difficult words and phrases, and a concluding admonishment or thought-provoking comment

Though White's discussion is shaped with a scholar's care, it is not weighted down with minutiae, his love for the psalms and the joy he takes in them make the book an excellent source for both instruction and inspiration.
