Sir William M. Ramsay (1851-1939), classical scholar and archaeologist, acknowledged as an outstanding authority on the life of Paul and the hy of the early church. He is especially noted for supplying historical background to the life of Paul, establishing the "South Galatian destination of Paul's Eputle to the Galatians, and confirming the historical reliability of Lucan writings.

Ramsay was professor of classical art and archaeology at Oxford, and laner professor of humanity at Aberdeen. During his career he extensively explored sites in western Turkey.
