<note>Issued in paperback for the first time, Bernhard W. Anderson's well-known book is a companion to the Bible that not only retells the history but also provides a well-informed introduction and work of reference. It describes the literary and theological development of the Old Testament within a framework of the development of Israel as a community. Professor Anderson's appraisal is lively and illuminating, and ensures that nothing of the poetry and vigour of the original is lost.

The text is that of the extensively revised Second Edition, which brought up to date many aspects of biblical history and interpretation in the light of the information which became available after the book's first and highly successful appearance. It is profusely illustrated with maps and photographs.

Bernhard W. Anderson is Professor of Biblical Theology in the Theological School of Drew University, New Jersey.

While Dean of the School he helped launch the Drew-McCormick Archeological Expedition which excavated the biblical city of Shechem. He has travelled widely in the Holy Land.</note>
