Hebrew bible in its social world and in ours

This work makes available many of Norman K. Gottwald's previously unpublished or obscurely published essays on major aspects of critical biblical studies and their relevance to modern theological and ethical thought. The essays are organized into two broad categories pertaining, respectively, to the Hebrew Bible and its contemporary appropriation. Essays on the Hebrew Bible focus on social critical method, the origins of Israel, prophecy and monarchy, canon and theology. Essays on the contemporary appropriation of the Hebrew Bible focus on theological and ethical hermeneutics, international relations, peace studies, political ideologies, and political economy. Readers of Gottwald's numerous works and articles will especially appreciate the methodological coherence and Interdisciplinary scope of the essays collected in this volume.
