Excerpt from the Preface: The influence of Babylon is woven throughout the biblical narrative from Genesis to Revelation, first related to the linguistic divisiveness of mankind, then historically dramatized as an enemy of the Kingdom of Judah, finally appearing as a symbol of anti-God powers. This study focuses attention on the archaeological history of Babylon and that city's impact upon biblical thought and life. From the research of archaeologists and linguists we have discovered the breadth of the cultural relationship between the Mesopotamian world and the Hebrew-Jewish kingdoms, discernible in writings such as the responses of wisdom writers to the problem of theodicy, in the structure of psalmody, in historiography and in legal precepts. To have developed any of these themes in depth would have necessitated the use of materials from Mesopotamian locations other than the city of Babylon, hence they have been, for the most part, avoided.
