<note>Karl Rahner, who died in 1983, is without question one of the outstanding Catholic theologians of this century. His influence has been profound and wide-ranging, from the philosophy of religion through dogmatic theology to moral and pastoral theology. His thought is subtle, nuanced, and difficult to grasp; and, over his long and productive life as a theologian, his views on many key topics underwent considerable development.
George Vass, a fellow theologian and fellow Jesuit as well as student and friend of Rahner, now provides us with precisely the key we need if we are to understand the corpus of this major thinker. Vass’s clearly structured for-volume study is not simply an exposition: by questioning, probing, and sometimes even sharply criticising, Vass compels his readers to follow him into dialogue with Rahner’s views. Karl Rahner himself could have wished for no greater tribute.
In this volume, A Theologian in Search of a Philosophy Extensive notes and a detailed bibliography are provided.</note>
