<note>THE RELIGIOUS SITUATION, written when Paul Tillich was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt, con- tinues to have enormous contemporary value. It is Tillich's contention that we have witnessed in the past decades not the opening stages of the decline of the West, but a concerted revolt against the spirit of capitalist society. The revolt is not confined to communism which, in Tillich's view, has adopted much of the spirit of capitalism. Actually it has become mani- fest in art, philosophy, and science. Cezanne, Van Gogh, Strindberg, Nietzsche, Einstein, Planck, Bergson, Husserl, and Freud are among the representatives of the revolt. The charac- ter of the revolt, its openness to the unlimited and transcend- ent, has made possible the renewal of the religious position. Tillich analyzes the religious situation in art, science, politics, and ethics, with particular emphasis on the contemporary state of Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, and Judaism</note>
