<note>THE TEXT AND COMMENTARY SERIES puts into a single paperback volume an authoritative text of a philosophical classic together with critical essays. Much more than a convenience is intended. The presence of critical material should prompt a closer reading of the text, should enable teachers to expand discussion of it, and should stimulate and encourage students to treat the problems discussed in the text as live philosophical issues subject to continuing criticism. The collection of many articles examining different aspects of the text from different philosophical perspectives should help the student appreciate the richness of the text and its many interpretive possibilities.

Most of the critical essays are from current periodicals, though a number will be original to these volumes. Each article is chosen for excellence, clarity, and relevance to the particular text. In addition, the editor of each volume will contribute an introductory essay and a selected bibliography. It is hoped that this series will contribute to more rewarding study of philosophical classics</note>
