<note>In a pastoral rather than confrontational way, this renowned bibli cal scholar discusses fundamentalist issues that concern all Chris- tians. Clearly and simply, James Barr sets forth evidence that has to be accounted for and accommodated within any view of biblical authority that might be worked out. He demonstrates that an under- standing of biblical authority has to begin with an acceptance of what the Bible really is, and not by forcing upon it a preconceived dogmatic scheme. In attempting to develop a sound basis for an evangelical, nonfun- damentalist biblical faith, Barr examines aspects of the Bible that are likely to present major difficulties. Thus, he considers questions of biblical inspiration, the origins of the world, Jesus and the Old Testament, and historical reconstruction of biblical events, among many others. He moves beyond problems associated with the Bible to put into perspective the thinking of modern critical theologians. The special focus of this book is on the ways in which understand- ings of Scripture can and must change as individuals grow in Chris- tian maturity. Such growth, according to Barr, does not dilute true belief, but rather leads to a progressive and spiritually enriching course of insights that enhance faith.</note>
