<note>Leonard Woolf called G. E. Moore 'the only great man whom I have ever met in the world of ordinary, real life'. In this book Paul Levy explains how Moore, a modest academic philosopher, came to have as wide an influence as he did on English intellectual life, and especially on Bloomsbury. As part of his account he has written the history to 1914 of the Cambridge Apostles, the semi-secret society whose members have ranged from Tennyson to Anthony Blunt, and in which Moore played a crucial part. He has had unrivalled access to the papers both of Moore and of the Apostles, and has made very telling use of them.</note>
