Business, religion, and ethics: inquiry and encounter

Money and religion have always been very close to the hearts of Americans. Yet, since the capitalist revolution and the advent of the modern corporation there has been no sustained and serious dialogue between religion and business. Ironically, the organiza tions that produce wealth and promote piety have existed at best in misunderstanding and tension at worst, they have been hostile or estranged. This unique book is an attempt to initiate a long overdue formal conversation between religion and business. Its eighteen essays were written by senior business executives, ordained eler- gy, and professors of ethics. The essays focus on two topics: the proper role of business in society, and the proper role of religion in economic affairs. Part I reviews the current confrontation between organized religion and corporations, the political and social activ ism of certain religious bodies, and the responses that their activ lam has received from the business community. Essays in Part II offer theological and ethical analyses of business from Protestant Catholic, and Jewish perspectives. The contributors to Part III in- vestigate the changing nature of business in a changing society centering on the issues of the social responsibilities of businesses. The essays in Part IV look explicitly at the meaning and role of busi- ness ethics as a new discipline intersecting religion and business.
