The ability of birds and other animals to navigate successfully through unknown territory has long been an object of fascination and the subject of serious study. From Australian aboriginal wanderers to Polynesian seafarers, human beings are also known to perform extraordinary feats of navigation. Yet, until Dr. Robin Baker began his controversial research in 1976, no one had ever attempted to discover how peops, lacking even a simple compass, find their way across unfamiliar terrain.
