CHOIRS OF THE GOD is about revisioning and redefining mascu- linity in purposeful yet sensitive ways. It is written by and for men who look beyond the rigid orthodoxies that have kept the West in a cultural and spiritual strait-jacket for two thousand years. The varied contributions acknowledge all that is virile, perceptive and spiritually aware within the masculine spirit, taking a broad view of God as the masculine image of Deity, beyond gender.
As an alternative to the cultural stereotyping of which men as
much as women are victims, or to the feminist apologia which decries all forms of masculine power, the world of myth and ritual offers valid insights into levels of masculinity that lie beyond contemporary gender traps. In this way men can begin a reappraisal of what it means to be a man.
The voices that make up this choir include Robert Bly, Robert Lawlor, John Matthews, Ean Begg and many others working in the field of men's mysteries. They sing of myth, legend, psy- chological discovery, and the reintegration of the masculine in a holistic lifestyle which also embraces the feminine. They offer a response to the problems of being male, both through acknowl- edgement of the God within, and through working with the aspects of male energy discoverable within myth and spirituality.
