<note>Natural and Supernatural is a history of the paranormal from earliest times to 1914. In it, Brian Inglis surveys the evidence about the phenomena which we now describe as paranormal - for example, ESP, clairvoyance, visions of the future, ghosts, poltergeists, table-turning, ectoplasm, levitations and examines the careers of the men and women associated with them shamans, prophets, sorcerers, mediums, charlatans, psychical researchers. As the author's academic training was in history, he is careful to assess the evidence; as his work has been in journalism, he has kept it readable. It is the first, and only, history of the subject.

It has the two basic qualities which make books on history endure: it is both scholarly and readable. Arthur Koestler, The Guardian

'Learned, wide-ranging and fascinating...a tour de force.' Renee Haynes Times Literary Supplement

'It is a masterpiece, and should remain a standard work forever.

Charles Gibbs-Smith

Lindbergh Professor, Smithsonian Institute

'An immense amount of material... covered prodigiously well.</note>
