<note>The God of the Bible has a consuming passion for justice. The gospel preached by the Son of God is good news to the poor. This is the biblical testimony. This, however, is not what we have traditionally understood of God and the gospel. The word of God is the Sword of the Spirit; the authentic voice of the Bible is a voice of dissent which exposes and challenges the inherent injustice embedded in much of contemporary culture, religion and socio- economic structures. This, the book demonstrates, is the witness of the Bible, in both the Old and the New Testaments. The resurrection hope does not mean that we must seek salvation beyond history. The power of the resurrection has broken into the realm of history, and it should encourage us to go on struggling for justice and to make manifest signs of God's own kingdom here and now.

Intended mainly for Christians committed to working for a just society, Sword of the Spirit seeks to provide a theological base and a hermeneutical perspective that will uphold their conviction through a fresh reading of the Bible.</note>
