<note>Rudolf Bultmann (1884-1976) was a prolific and wide-ranging writer. Best known, perhaps, as a New Testament critic, he also contributed to systematic theology, history, philosophy and hermeneutics. His work influenced several generations of Christian theologians and it still remains important and worthy of serious study. His reputation will surely endure as one of the leading theologians and biblical scholars of the twentieth century.

This work provides a careful and scholarly survey of Bultmann's life and work. It explores the historical context of his ideas explaining their nature and significance. In addition, it evaluates his thinking from the perspective of contemporary theology.

The work's comprehensiveness and clarity make it an excellent introduction to Bultmann for the uninitiated, and its sophistication and erudition render it an important study even for professional theologians.

David Fergusson was formerly a lecturer in the theology faculty at Edinburgh University. He is now Professor of Theology at the University of Aberdeen.
