How to speak of God? In recent years interest in this question has exploded beyond academic circles to be come a churchwide concern. Traditional language of Father, Son, Lord, King, Creator has been severely challenged by feminists, contemporary atheism, claims of other world religions, and a deep ambiva- lence over traditional forms and expressions used in worship and proclamation.

Stimulated by these challenges, the faculty of Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago has pro- duced an interdisciplinary sourcebook on the problems and prospects of God-talk today. They probe for new insights in philosophy of religion, feminist theology, Hebrew Scriptures, New Testament, trinitarian the- ology, mission, and worship.

Learning new ways to name God is always risky. Here is a team effort to aid both church and academy in a responsible search for new meanings of God in Christian life and thought.
