A new version of the sixteenth-century Epistle of Jesus Christ to the Soul by Johnanes Lanspersius which admirably reveals the author's psychological accuracy and power of spiritual direction. He couches his advice in the form of a letter of information and encouragement written directly by Jesus to the individual soul. The emphasis is on humility and self-denial, on how to know oneself and how to reach a true piety in a world which helps one's own inclinations to interrupt the search for perfection. The constant model is human trials and problems. He is loving and understanding, yet quick to point out the devices by which we try to escape the truth about ourselves.
