Book's Detail
Karl Barth, A Theological Legacy

This book makes available to American audiences a study of the life and thought of one of the most significant theologians of the twentieth century. A devoted student of Karl Barth and recognized theologian in his own right, Eberhard Jüngel presents Barth on his own terms, in light of his own professed intentions and statements. He devotes special attention to Barth's early development, his politics, ethics, and anthropology. Additionally, he provides a critical analysis of differing interpretations of the theologian and his politics. Also included is Jüngel's moving eulogy offered on the occasion of Barth's death in 1968.

"Eberhard Jüngel has a seminal mind of the first order. He is one of the most respected theologians in Europe today. It is very fitting that Karl Barth, a Theological Legacy should be published in English at the time that the centennial of Karl Barth's birth is being celebrated. History depicts Barth as a theologian without compromise, who led the resistance against Hitler and the Nazi threat. . The essays are delightful reading and are highly commended for a refresher on the past century's greatest theologian." James 1. McCord

"Eberhard Jüngel's reading of Karl Barth is a brilliant tour de force. Not only does he encompass with the justified confidence of an expert reader the vast corpus of Barth's writing, he also has the sure touch of an expository and interpretive artist in his description of the man and his work. For those who want to orient themselves in Barth's theology this is the book to read."-Hans Frei
