<note>In his monumental five-volume series, Jesus of Nazareth Yesterday and Today, Juan Luis Segundo attempts to place the person and message of Jesus before us all, believer and unbeliever alike. He shakes off the chris- tological dust of previous centuries so that we can hear the words that Jesus spoke.

Having set forth his terms and methodology in Volume 1, Segundo, in Volume 2, develops a novel approach to a classic theological pursuit: the quest for the historical Jesus.

The author draws upon his solid understanding of contemporary New Testament scholarship to explore the nature and implications of Jesus" parables and proclamation of the kingdom of God as found in the synop- tic gospels. The result is insightful and challenging exegesis, which en- ables the reader to see Jesus "as a witness to a more humane and liberated life," whose message of effective love is imbued with both reli- gious and political significance.

JUAN LUIS SEGUNDO completed his theo- logical studies at Louvain and received his Doctorate of Letters from the Sorbonne. At present he is chaplain to various groups in his native Uruguay. He has taught theology at the universities of Harvard, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Birmingham, and São Paulo. His previous works include the five- volume Theology for Artisans of a New Hu- manity, The Liberation of Theology, and The Hidden Motives of Pastoral Action.</note>
