<note>"The Heart of the Church Consultation" of theologians and pastoral leaders met May 6-11, 1990 in Techny, Illinois, to ex- amine the pastoral implications of the evi- dence from the early post-biblical authors that baptism in the Holy Spirit is integral to Christian initiation and is normative. The eleven authors are: Tertullian, Hilary of Poitiers, Cyril of Jerusalem, Basil, Gregory Nazianzus, John Chrysostom, Philoxenus, John of Apamea, Theodoret of Cyrrhus, Severus of Antioch, Joseph Hazzaya. They represent Latin, Greek, and Syrian cultures, almost the whole of the Mediterranean seaboard. The biblical evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit was also reviewed.

The Heart of the Church Consultation of theologians and pastoral leaders was con- vened by the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, with the encouragement of the Bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Charismatic Fe- newal, to write this document.</note>
