In dialogue with the best that the church has given us on the problems, he makes Scripture his criterion and concludes that there is an element of mystery that must be recognized and honored. Jewett includes a brief survey of historical interpretation of the doctrine, an assemblage of the relevant biblical data, a considera- tion of the concept of corporate election, and then, most substan- tially, an exploration of the complexities of individual election. He also provides extended analyses of some of the major formulations of the doctrine, including those of Calvin, Barth, Arminius, and Amyraut.
