<note>"Dr. Jewett takes on the most difficult problems facing Chris- tian theology-God's sovereignty and the fact of evil, God's love and his judgment, grace and human freedom. In dialogue with the best that the church has given us on the problems, he makes Scripture his criterion and concludes that there is an element of mystery that must be recognized and honored. For accuracy, clarity, and competency, this is the best modern discussion of the subject that I know.

-M. EUGENE OSTERHAVEN

Western Theological Seminary

Drawing on his years of teaching theology to students in a multi- denominational setting, Paul K. Jewett here provides a concise introduction to the thorny issues of election and predestination.

Jewett includes a brief survey of historical interpretation of the doctrine, an assemblage of the relevant biblical data, a considera- tion of the concept of corporate election, and then, most substan- tially, an exploration of the complexities of individual election. He also provides extended analyses of some of the major formulations of the doctrine, including those of Calvin, Barth, Arminius, and Amyraut.

Election and predestination have been difficult and controversial issues throughout the whole history of the church. Paul Jewett's book is a clear and balanced presentation that encourages readers to draw their own conclusions on this important subject.</note>
