<note>An admirably readable account of Christian defensive writings from New Testament times to our own. Students who, entering the maelstrom of contemporary theological debate, find difficulty in studying historical theology will benefit from this book. Move experienced readers will profitably learn from this survey of the achievements and mistakes of Christian apologists."

The Expository Times

The Christian gospel has always been subject to attack, from inside as well as from outside the church. In Christian Apolo- getics. Professor Reid outlines the actual ways in which Christian ity, faced with particular situations which called for defense. responded to these challenges: and with what results. The author proceeds historically, keeping in mind four questions: 1) What does Apologetics defend? 2) Can Apologetics be faithful to the Laith? 3) Against whom or what is the delense to be conducted? 1) How is the delense to be conducted? Thus he provides both an historical record of apologetics as it has actually been practiced. and a clarification of the principles of apologetics. Both aspects of the study are essential to contemporary apologetics, confronted by new challenges and demands.

Christian Apologetics will prove particularly useful to the student. Lewis B. Smedes, Professor of Theology and Philosophy of Religion at Fuller Theological Seminary, writes that Reid "offers the student an introduction to, and a feel of, the multi pronged apologetic outreach of a common Christian faith during the many periods of its articulation.... a light, lucid, and neatly packaged and organized review of the entire gamut of apologetic history."

J.K.S. Reid is the distinguished Professor of Christian Dogmatics at the University of Aberdeen, and co-editor of the Scottish Jour nal of Theology. He is the author of Anthority of Scupture. Ous Life in Christ, Christ, and Theological Treatises.</note>
