<note>Few things seemed more certain after the Reformation than Paul's teachings on salvation and ethics. But several New Testament scholars have challenged the old view. Some argue that no consistent Pauline theology of the law even exists.

In The Law and Its Fulfillment Thomas R. Schreiner explains why new proposals have shaken the footings of the "Reformation consensus." Then he goes back to the Epistles themselves for a fresh look at what Paul said and his reasoning.

Thorough, analytical study of key texts shows that the language and logic of Paul's teachings do not support many conclusions of

modern New Testament scholarship. On the other hand, these studies have produced evidence that some nuances of Pauline theology need to be revisited.

Through biblical and extrabiblical sources the author reintroduces those much-maligned first-century "Judaizers" who opposed the gospel of grace. Did Paul truly understand their vision of godliness? Did he present an adequate corrective for their errors?

Schreiner asserts that Christians can stand confident on the doctrines of law and the fulfillment of the law found in Scripture. He also suggests where they should seek to understand those truths better.</note>
