Spiritual Classics Series
This series, edited by John Griffiths, aims to introduce the general reader to works from the various traditions of spirituality which are of enduring value and interest but which are not generally accessible. It includes some well-known works which will gain a new lease on life from a fresh translation or adaptation, but the emphasis is on texts not available in any modern version. The translations and adaptations are responsibly made from the best manuscripts and existing editions, with the prime concern being to present spiritual treasures from past ages in good, direct, modern English. The introduction to each text helps bring the past to life by setting the author [where known] and the work in its cultural, social and historical context, and relating it to streams of thought and belief that, often unconsciously, still influence our beliefs and behaviour today. The classics are illustrated with woodcuts, steel engravings, or copies of illuminations in monochrome.
