Can the Church retain a faithful and creative presence in the inner cities as the pressures of finance and dwindling congregations become more acute? What kind of resources and strategies are required for urban mission and ministry in a time of rapid change and social fragmentation? More then ever, Christians are challenged to make sense of the competing narratives, values and aims found in its urban context as the contemporary city invites awe and apprehension in equal measure as it continues to change in unpredictable ways. The author shows how a fresh integration of theology, prayer and strategic community partnerships is able to promote a more effective role for the Church in the global city. His distinctive approach combines theological wisdom and reflection with stories, prayer and poetry. It makes a plea for hard thinking, a disciplined spirituality, creative partnerships and a fresh appreciation of the potential that exists at the margin. Rod Garner is an Anglican priest and theologian with extensive experience of urban ministry and a research interest in the contemporary city. |
