Dr. Turner has an outstanding career in religion, the arts, community service, ecumenical efforts, etc. He served as an Executive with the New York Bible Society (all five boroughs) for ten years, and as Executive Director for the Council of Churches, Brooklyn Division, for two years.

He has traveled and preached around the world. At present he is editor of the Baptist Progress, his denomination's bi-monthly newspaper

Mt. Carmel Baptist Church is situated in the midst of the Bedford-Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn. When Dr. Turner felt that the traditional church programs for evangelis-tic outreach were falling short of desired goals, he turned to the unique evangelistic outreach of turning the entire church's congregation into lay ministers

The program is described in this book. The church compiled a service directory of all social welfare agencies: federal, state, and municipal, such as those persons who populate much of the Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Then the task was selling the total church on this program, pointing out that if the church hoped to reach their neighbors with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the church first must help eliminate the human hurts of these people.

Dr. Turner's wife, Laura, an outstanding educator, has been instrumental in her supportive role in this program as have their two children.
