John Steward was born in South Australia. As a boy, he lived in a village in East Java for three years, while his father worked for the Indonesian government. Back in Adelaide he studied agricultural science and earned a Ph. D. in soil science at Adelaide University. While tutoring in botany and soil science at the Queensland University, he studied theology at ther Baptist Theological College of Queensland, gaining an honours B.D.
