The first draft of this study was prepared at the behest of the Education for Ministry and Mission unit of the Episcopal Church. Its purpose was then-and continues to be in this final form-to address the competing and sometimes conflicting claims of renewal movements in the church. The central issue is the gift of the Holy Spirit and the gifts that flow from the Spirit's ministry in the world.

Weekend renewal movements, parish faith development programs, and the charismatic movement (to name a few) are all means to appropriate the charismata, the gifts that God has given his people. The authors address this issue in both its Biblical and theological context and present a straightfoward, lucid, and insightful discussion of great use to individuals, parish study groups, and leaders.
