After Sunday: a theology of work

"Armand Larive has written a careful and creative work on a long-neglected topic. His theological exploration of work is at once profoundly innovative and yet anchored in the daily realities of Christian life. Philosophically sophisticated and well-read in the intricacies of economics, Larive cuts through the barriers that the Christian tradition has raised to the serious exploration of work as a theological category, and proposes a Trinitarian account of secular work as a calling to co-creation. This book deserves serious attention and will provoke much debate."

-PAUL LAKELAND, author of The Liberation of the Laity: In Search of an Accountable Church

"Father Larive's work has the merit of pushing Christian discourse on work beyond the conventional pieties exhorting greater weekday remembrance of God. Instead, Larive grounds work in both a creation-centered natural theology and also, most interestingly, in the doctrine of the Trinity. In arguing that work is participation in God's ongoing creation, Larive rescues work from its modern sterility, in which piety is an optional add-on. In grounding work in the Trinity, Larive squarely faces the issue often skirted: not all work is Christian work. He asserts that work infused with Trinitarian self-giving becomes meaningful, whether or not it is explicitly religious. After Sunday has, then, the merit of touching on the reasons for the secularization of work and presenting an answer with theological depth, not mere and more exhortation. I commend this book as a vade mecum for all who seek a fresh and current theological approach to this peculiarly modern problem."
