In 1979 the LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN CHRISTIAN PEACE CONFERENCE called together more than one hundred persons from around the world to discuss the theme EVANGELIZATION AND POLITICS. Meeting in Matanzas, Cuba, these distinguished Christian theologians and activists addressed the question, "What is the relation-ship between spirituality and political action in our times - a time mark-ed by increasing militarization of the region, deepening class conflict in Central America and the ripening of military dictatorships in the Southern Cone!"
