In search of christian unity: basic consensus/nasic diffferences

Hundreds of ecumenical dialogues have produced state-ments of clarification, convergence, and consensus; yet in most cases the churches have made little progress toward unity. Have the dialogues treated symptoms, rather than the underlying disease? Is there a "fundamental consensus" in spite of the lack of ecumenical progress, and, if so, what is it? Or are there "fundamental differences" that explain the lack of progress?
