This gift from one of the greatest twentieth-century Protestant theologians, Paul Tillich, is a collection of hopeful and realistic writings on peace from the years Tillich spent in America. Beginning in 1937, the book documents Tillich's pre-World War II hope and his resistance to Hitler and moves to the time before his death in 1965, when he preached frequently on hope. It includes his first public political speech in America, on anti-Semitism, essays on planning for peace, and criticism of the peace thought of John Foster Dulles and Pope John XXIII. Essays on nuclear weapons and German boundary questions illustrate the continuing timeliness of Tillich's thought.

The twelve articles, including several never before in print, begin with theological reflection on the issues of overcoming tyranny and move to resistance to nuclear weapons. The book includes thoughts on the necessity of human social security and international order as prerequisites of peace.
