<note>J. Carter Swaim.

"J. Carter Swaim's total career-student, pastor, teacher, biblical scholar-has prepared him to bring the focus of Scripture on the most critical issue of the day-War and Peace."

Clinton M. Marsh, President, Knoxville College

"At a time when the world is looking desperately for peace, kindness, and holiness on our beautiful, God-given planet, the book by J. Carter Swaim will help many Christians find a proper stand on the issues of violence, war, and armaments."

Robert Muller, author of Most of All, They Taught Me Happiness, Secretary of the U.N. Economic and Social Council

"I have been charmed, informed, and inspired by War, Peace, and the Bi ble. There is an exciting display of understanding and ability to relate to real life. The writings are a harvest of information for the person who wishes to be informed, whether lay, priest-pastor, or scholar.

Harry Brunger, International Division, YMCA

J. CARTER SWAIM is an ordained minister of the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. He was Professor of New Testament Literature and Exegesis at Western (now Pittsburgh) Theological Seminary for ten years and Ex-ecutive Director of the Department of the English Bible of the National Council of Churches from 1954 to 1964. His previous works include Right and Wrong Ways to Use the Bible, Why Read the Bible?, Unlocking the Treasures of Biblical Imagery and 109 ar-ticles in the Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible. "During my professional career as teacher of the New Testament," he writes, "the question always was, What did it mean? Although I have accepted my pen-sion, I do not consider myself retired. Freed of routine duties, I devote my time to the more urgent question, What does it mean? I like to think of myself now as devoted to an Apostolate of Peace."</note>
