With glad and generous hearts: A personal look at sunday worship

WITH GLAD AND GENEROUS HEARTS

The author describes this book as his effort to put into everyday speech recent developments in the under-standing of Christian worship. He relies on biblical material and personal anecdotes as he takes the reader through an entire worship service in a local church. In doing this, William Willimon focuses on each act of worship as a statement of faith-individually and cor-porately.

Dr. Willimon addresses the subject with thorough knowledge and firsthand experience of the worship life of the church, especially in United Methodism. He af-firms the worship reforms of the last two decades and emphasizes that the form and substance of worship can now be understood as one complete whole. The ele-ments of a worship service which are carefully exam-ined include: gathering, confession, praise, scripture, sermon, creed, intercession, the Lord's supper, and sending forth.

With Glad and Generous Hearts is the third book in a trilogy which began with Remember Who You Are and Sunday Dinner. As with the first two books, John Westerhoff III has provided an educational guide for the book, making this an excellent resource for small group use.

William Willimon is Minister to the University and Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke University.
