<note>In an important and unique new book, Charles R. Foster explores what "teaching does in and for the good of a people with a common history and a shared vision of the future." Rather than viewing religious teachers as "instructional technicians" who implement educational programs, Foster sees them as mediators between God and his people a cohesive, strength-ening force within the faith community. "Saint Paul," he says, "claimed that teaching was a gift to the church for the sake of building it up as the Body of Christ. Teaching in that light is crucial in any community concerned with its own destiny."

Foster strengthens his argument by exploring in detail the concept of the church as a community of shared values and faith. He distinguishes these "children of God" as, Ideally, being childlike-not children in the literal sense, but as a corporate entity with a sense of wonder and belief. Faithfulness, he points out, is enhanced when one follows Christ's admonition to be childlike. Teaching, therefore, can bring all these elements (community, faith, and childlikeness) together.

When a faith community desires to see its values and hopes passed on to succeeding generations, Foster's concept of teaching becomes essential. All church leaders and profes-sionals will gain much insight into their roles through Teaching In the Community of Faith.</note>
