THE CITY is the supreme symbol of civilization-indeed, the city is civilization. The cities of history and the civil orders which they built paralleled the nomad and village cultures from which they came. From time to time these different cultural expressions met and clashed. Today they are being fused into a new form of urbanism which promises to be the essential life-style of mankind for the foreseeable future. Stubborn nostalgic trends may appear and reappear.
