Focus: rethinking the meaning of our evangelism

"Just as the challenge to live out evangelism includes the whole world and all people, it also involves the whole person. It won't do to try to love and serve God and to love one's neighbor only with one's emotions or just with the intellect. Faithful witness and evangelism mean loving and sharing with heart and mind, soul and strength. Such a committed witness is, of course, a great undertaking and adventure-as it is meant to be."

-from the Foreword by The Rt. Rev. Frederick H. Borsch

Malcolm alcolm Boyd's stirring call to evangelism is as relevant today as when it was first written forty years ago. In Focus, he challenges a new generation to a life based on the premise that, properly understood, evangelism places God in focus. He stresses that true evangelism happens only on an intensely personal level. It is not about "bringing people to Christ so they don't burn in hell," but instead about living as an invitation to others.

Focus is a clarion call to all Christians, urging them to make the Gospel known not only to those who do not know it, but also to those who already live within the church. It offers concrete and specific approaches to genuine evangelism in today's culture.

MALCOLM BOYD was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1955. Soon afterward he became a Freedom Rider in the Civil Rights movement, serving as a college chaplain in two interracial parishes. He currently serves as Poet/Writer-in-Residence at the Cathedral Center of Saint Paul in Los Angeles, where he also served as chaplain of the AIDS Commission. He is the author of twenty-six books, including Running with Jesus: The Prayers of Malcolm Boyd and Simple Grace: A Mentor's Guide to Growing Older.
