The creation of wealth: A christian's case for capitalism

Is capitalism Christian?

Market-oriented economies around the world are far more successful than those that are state-run. But certain features of capitalism make some Christians uncomfortable. What about competition, self-interest, individualism and the profit motive? What about inequality? Are these compatible with biblical teaching?

To answer these questions Brian Griffiths considers the economic, theological, ethical and ideological dimensions of creating wealth. While he finds that some capitalism is shot through with humanistic values, he believes a capitalism based on biblical principles offers the best hope for using our resources wisely and meeting the needs of the world.

Brian Griffiths is dean of the City University Business School in London, a director of the Bank of England and a noted international economist.
